Inspirations of Watercolorist Charles Demuth

KIPP provides students with a relevant, exciting and individualized learning environment, allowing students to emerge with the critical thinking, global vision, and knowledge to succeed in college, the competitive world beyond, and be leaders in their communities.

KIPP believes that all students can learn and achieve at high levels if given the opportunity and that a great education can transform lives.  The arts are a part of the KIPP experience as art enhances their system of schools core beliefs.

At KDCA, visual arts teacher Jessica Harron has described the curriculum, “The visual arts teach skills that enable students to creatively problem solve.  Students are required to try hard after failure and take risks to create artwork. Our visual arts courses contain several projects that strengthen critical thinking and problem solving while incorporating the elements of line, shape, space, value, texture, color and time along with the principles of design including unity, variety, balance, emphasis, and rhythm.” Courses include drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and art history combined with writing and research requirements.

This exhibition features artwork created by high school students who learned about local American watercolorist Charles Demuth (1883-1935). A lifelong resident of Lancaster, PA, Demuth was trained in Philadelphia. KIPP students studied Demuth’s various artistic styles and his contributions to modern and contemporary art.
