Philadelphia area artist Miriam Carpenter has a reverence for trees and for the wood that they are made of. She has said, “When a tree has reached the end of its life, the shadow of what once was presents another gift in the form of a satiny, warm, sensual material. Each piece of wood has its own story – reflections of moments specific to a place and time is within the architecture of the species.”

It is through Carpenter’s artistry that she reveals, transforms, and carves the wood into beautiful objects – extraordinarily delicate feathers, small egg-like orbs, and undulating forms including vessels and frames.

The wooden feathers are technically challenging as each are hand-carved and made of white oak – a hardwood with open pores and strong medullary rays – and then burnished with graphite powder. The egg-like objects and vessel are turned, carved and made of bleached ash finished with a whitewash and liming wax.
