The Art of the Umbrella: From the Collection of the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia Page Content Terminal CNovember 4,1988 – June 8,1999 The Fabric Workshop and Museum, founded in 1977 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the only nonprofit organization in the United States devoted to experimental fabric design and printing. Over the past twenty-two years, the Museum has collaborated with painters, sculptors, architects, photographers, and ceramists who have ventured beyond their familiar pursuits to boldly reshape and redefine the boundaries of art. The Museum is now internationally recognized for its artist-in-residence program, its apprenticeships to train inner city youths, and its collection of more than 2,400 superbly designed and printed works that have been exhibited in museums throughout the world. The Art of the Umbrella is a small sampling of unique umbrellas made especially for The Fabric Workshop and Museum by invited artists. As you can see, umbrellas are not just for protecting us against the weather, but are in themselves works of art.
