Philadelphia artist Charles Burwell is known for his densely patterned paintings and works on paper. Burwell's abstract compositions are spatially complex and feature multiple layers of transparent and opaque lines, shapes, and symbols. In this particular series, he has used a limited palette of gray, black, and rust. Significant within each drawing is a circular labyrinth that suggests some sort of mapping or codification. Burwell's drawing systems are a balance of abstraction and representation, figure and ground, organic yet stylized-opposing processes that allow for a multitude of associations.
