Philadelphia area artist Martina Johnson-Allen has created a series of wall mounted dress-like sculptures. These nonfunctional handcrafted garments feature only the front half of the dress in order to emphasize its symbolic nature. Johnson-Allen is interested in exploring the variety of ways in which dresses can be expressive of individuality, creativity, history, ethnicity, and pride. Her ephemeral work honors the female self and human spirit.
