Terminal B

November 9, 2002 - May 18, 2003

Philadelphia artist Gabrielle Kanter creates sculptural objects using repetitive techniques and extremely labor-intensive processes. Her work is most often made of wood that she has methodically transformed into a dense collage of patterns.

At first, Kanter's artwork appears formal and minimal, but a closer look reveals the obsessive nature of her artistic expression.

In Untitled, (Circle Drawing), Kanter has cut thousands of tree branches into short cross-sections that resemble small wooden circles. The branches, subtly unique in width, depth, and coloration, are tightly arranged side-by-side to fill rectangular aluminum frames. The amassed circles create an elaborate overall pattern that was realized through a singular repetitive process and extraordinary patience.
