Terminal D

October 27, 2004 - March 28, 2005

Philadelphia artist Lois Jean Knobler creates modestly sized abstract assemblages using odd combinations of familiar everyday objects-woven basketry, hats, gloves, Styrofoam heads, pantyhose, jewelry-anything that is attractive to her for its visual or tactile qualities. Most of Knobler's sculptures are suggestive of the human figure and often, reminiscent of ritual objects from African, Native American, Caribbean, or Peruvian cultures.

Knobler's assemblages are a continuing series of objects that seemingly proliferate. It is an obsessive process of transformation. Sometimes the forms are recognizable and specific images emerge. Sometimes the objects are visceral and ambiguous. It is their collective presence that emphasizes the intuitive and sensory nature of the artist's highly personal creative process.
