George Katsutoshi Nakashima (1905-1990), a long-time resident of New Hope, Pennsylvania, was world renowned for his dedication to woodworking and his distinct style of furniture design. Nakashima's aesthetic always honored the inherent beauty of the tree-its character, shape, and wood grain. Nature inspired Nakashima's life and his art. Beginning in 1945, George Nakashima shared his woodworking passion with his family and master craftsmen coworkers-all working in unison to create his designs. His daughter Mira Nakashima-Yarnell spent much of her childhood in the workshop learning from her father and worked for 20 years as his assistant designer and collaborator. More then a decade after his death, under her leadership, the studio continues to create Nakashima's classic furniture designs as well as develop new work that embraces his aesthetic, techniques, and philosophy. This exhibition features a sampling of furniture that represents the past, present, and future of Nakashima Studios.
