October 31, 2006 - April 23, 2007
For two days in early Spring 2006, editorial cartoonist Tony Auth and associate editor John Timpane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, visited the Philadelphia Zoo to capture the behind the scenes activities of both the humans and the animals as the zoo prepared for its peak summer season. The zoo is a perfect subject for Auth and Timpane. Like some of their previous collaborations-the Philadelphia Orchestra, Flower Show, and a Phillies game, they artistically narrate routine occurrences that the public is typically not privy to. Timpane wrote about the zoo project, "a whole world goes on behind the scenes-so many creative, multitalented people are working so closely together-before the gates open and Homo sapiens join the other animals." A selection of Auth's zoo drawings and Timpane's text appeared in The Inquirer on Sunday, May 14, 2006. Their intention is to "show how people work together to put on so many wonderful things we take for granted."
