Rudolf Staffel: Light Gatherers Page ContentBetween Terminal C and DAugust 30, 2002 - March 2, 2003 Philadelphia ceramicist Rudolf Staffel (1911-2002), has earned an international reputation for his luminous porcelain vessels that he called "Light Gatherers." Staffel, for more than 30 years, was fascinated by porcelain's ability to gather, hold, and diffuse light. His hand-built bowl-like forms were a source of endless experimentation using a variety of gestural techniques-stretching, pinching, piercing, overlapping, and incising-all to achieve translucency and to serve light. Staffel's singular vision had been unwavering. Yet his lifetime of work remained spontaneous and often playful in nature.
