Since 1981, James Hayes of Broomall, Pennsylvania, has been a collector of suiseki (pronounced su-ee-SEK-ee)-an ancient Japanese art form where stones are viewed as miniature landscapes. Like many people, Hayes was introduced to this unusual aesthetic through bonsai, a well-known tradition of shaping diminutive trees. However, with suiseki there is no human intervention. The stones are creations of nature often found in mountain streams, windswept deserts, or water pools-places where forces of nature wear down and sculpt the hard stone surfaces.
