For more than 40 years, Philadelphia-area artist Ken Vavrek has been creating abstract sculptural forms using clay, and most recently, papier-mâché. In either medium, Vavrek's sculptures are usually wall-hung and feature simple geometric and organic forms joined together to create a singular three-dimensional framework. The sculptures typically have thickly textured surfaces whether glazed or painted. In particular, the paper pieces appear stucco-like as if the underlying structure has been encased in cement or encrusted by once molten lava. Seemingly frozen in time, Vavrek's forms appear preserved for further study and interpretation.
