Stephanie Beck: Cut Paper Sculpture

Terminal D

Philadelphia artist Stephanie Beck is known for her sculptural paper compositions of imagined urban landscapes. Each composition features a multitude of handcrafted small-scale paper structures that are cut and glued together. Each all-white structure is unique and represents a high-rise, home, bridge – even construction equipment. The compositions appear to be scale models for a neighborhood or city but all of the structures seem under construction, as portions of walls and rooftops remain partially built, almost skeletal. The buildings are typically empty and uninhabited except for a few birds. Yet their pristine nature is indicative of something new. As a result, there is an overwhelming sense of abandonment. It appears as if everything in the neighborhood or city had been constructed simultaneously and left behind, frozen in time, their futures forever unrealized.
