Philadelphia has long been
recognized for its creative community of professional artists; in particular,
its large population of artists who focus on studio craft disciplines that
include ceramics, fibers, glass, metals, plastics, and wood. Philadelphia also
has a vibrant mix of colleges and universities that feature crafts-related
degree programs as well as galleries solely dedicated to promote contemporary
studio crafts. As a result, the City has frequently been the site of
international art conferences that celebrate and communicate the importance of
their respective mediums. In 2009, Philadelphia is proud to be the host city
for the annual conference of The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), a
nonprofit organization that has an international membership of more than 3,000
artists, educators, and students.
