Matt Pruden: End of the Earth Terminal F, Concourse 2 |
Philadelphia artist Matt Pruden
has created several bodies of work based on his fascination with
early-twentieth century history, literature, and art as chroniclers of the
human spirit. In this particular series End of the Earth, Pruden has focused on
historic polar expeditions of the time period. He is interested in the cultural
psyche of the often ill-prepared adventurers who dreamt and risked their lives
to explore the extreme unknown. Pruden's watercolors, like many photographs of
these early expeditions, depict small figures within a vast, blank, and
overwhelmingly barren landscape. The figures are quiet, isolated, and stoic
amidst their formidable surroundings. Each image captures a solitary moment of
their epic story with many of the narrative details forever left untold.
