Justyna Badach: Tales of the Rough Guide Refugee, Photographs from the Coast of Croatia

January 2, 2004 - June 27, 2004

Philadelphia artist Justyna Badach, a Russian immigrant who recently became a United States citizen, is fascinated by the aura of Croatia-its complex culture, exotic landscape, and tumultuous history. In the summer of 2003, Badach traveled to Croatia's Dalmatian coast, a longtime tourist hot spot for Eastern and Western Europeans until the outbreak of the civil war in 1991.

In this series of large-scale photographs, Badach has emphasized the horizontal expansiveness of the landscape where the sea, sky, and mountains appear to converge. The photographs are a romanticized, almost painterly, look at the coastline as an atmospheric fog has obscured much of its detail. Like the country itself, these images depict a landscape that is seemingly both dormant and in transition, unique yet familiar, mysterious but somehow welcoming.
