Philadelphia artist Susan Myers is a metalsmith whose most recent work is fabricated from sheets of aluminum flashing. Myers cuts, bends, and reconfigures the aluminum into unexpected objects of delight – gift boxes adorned with ornate bows and suspended sculptural ribbons chandelier-like in presence. There is a startling beauty seeing presents and large-scale decorative ribbons made of metal. The nature of aluminum packages and bows forever preserves the thrill of receiving a beautifully wrapped gift. Or the moment you walk into a party and marvel at the elaborate decorations. Yet there is no desire to unwrap the gifts to see what’s inside as they are treasures in themselves. The pleasure is in knowing that these objects are there for our visual enjoyment as a timeless memorial to those anticipated moments of happiness.
