Philadelphia artist Syd Carpenter has been working with clay since the mid-1970’s. She began her artistic studies in fine arts as a painter, but gradually her focus turned to ceramic sculpture. She was interested in the medium’s physicality—its ability to describe form and texture, as well as provide a paintable surface area. Carpenter’s work is characterized by the manner in which she combines seemingly disparate elements into a richly painted sculptural form. Her unique visual dialogue between recognizable objects and organic spiraling, twisting shapes invite multiple interpretations and thought provoking narratives.
