Susan Fenton: Silent Boundaries

Terminal F, Concourse 1

Philadelphia artist Susan Fenton is known for her meticulously hand painted photographs that typically feature a singular female figure posed within a shallow space in front of a dark backdrop. Stoic almost mannequin, the model might be partially cloaked or wrapped, with her head covered by cloth-sometimes mask-like, sometimes hat or turban-like. Centrally framed within the picture, positioned squarely frontal or rear-facing, the figure always has bare shoulders or a bare back, and the eyes are either downcast or hidden by costume elements. Highly staged, Fenton's photographs are mysterious tableaus that depict surrealistic circumstances shrouded in isolation and silence.
