The History of Black Dolls

From the Collection of the Philadelphia Doll Museum

Terminal A/B

Founded by doll collector Barbara Whiteman, the Philadelphia Doll Museum is home to approximately 300 black dolls. It is the only known museum in the United States that advocates the collection and preservation of black dolls as artifacts of history and culture. This rare collection represents the evolution of black dolls made in Africa, Europe, and the United States from the early 19th-century to today.
