Lewis Knauss: The Essence of Nature

Terminal E

Philadelphia fiber artist Lewis Knauss is inspired by nature's visual beauty-its colors, patterns, textures, and density. Using a variety of materials such as linen, hemp, reeds, beads, pins, and acrylic paint, Knauss creates small-scale abstractions that are interpretations of the landscape. His works are intricately knotted and woven, built element by element and thread by thread.

Knauss is interested in the essence of nature and the intimate relationship between nature and humanity. His works make universal references to meadows, bales of hay, riverbeds, or the horizon. It is this familiarity that allows the viewer to contemplate, to make associations, and to remember their own meditations on the landscape.
