Myungjin Choi: Generation (Cityscape)

Terminal C
March 27, 2010 - October 20, 2010

South Korean born Myungjin Choi is a ceramic artist known for her sculptural installations that typically incorporate a singular repeated element - often thousands of times - to create a larger artwork or environment. For this exhibition, Choi has created a series of five cityscapes that represent evolving views of Philadelphia. The artist has used approximately 7,000 small rectangular elements, each symbolizing a building within the city. The five sculptural forms range from an interpretive topography to clusters of suspended buildings. Each form seems in motion as it gradually transforms from a cityscape into a swirl of buildings that appears to ascend toward the sky. Choi has visualized and interpreted the stages of flight, from take off to landing, through this ethereal yet labor-intensive installation.
