Don Nakamura: Clay Bodies

Terminal D

Ceramic sculptor Don Nakamura moved from his native Hawaii in 1987 to study at the nationally renowned Clay Studio, Philadelphia. He has lived and worked in Philadelphia ever since. The clay forms and images that he makes are inspired by his own personal experiences—from his interest in horticulture and the lush Hawaiian landscape to urban life in the city.

Nakamura’s sculptures are hand-built from clay coils that he paints with intensely colored low-fire glazes. His pieces are comprised of primarily abstract elements that are stacked and joined together to create curious fantasy-like forms.
