Philadelphia artist Todd Noe creates small-scale metal sculptures that are beautifully and precisely handcrafted. Noe's sculptures feature miniaturized common objects that are simplified symbols of things like a chair, ladder, briefcase, umbrella, or shovel. Noe also creates invented objects-things that seem familiar and nostalgic with subtle references to machine parts, old toys, and hand tools.
These elements are often presented in a linear pattern or dangling from a central form like charms on a bracelet. The arranged compositions are curious because they are unlikely pairings such as the stacking of an umbrella and chair on top of a unicycle. These mysterious groupings encourage the viewer to make free associations between the objects in order to decode their narrative possibilities.
