Lizbeth Stewart

Between Cats & Monkeys

Terminal D

Philadelphia artist Lizbeth Stewart has created exotic clay animals since the early seventies. While traveling in Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, and Peru, she became interested in primitive folk art where mythological animals embodied both human and supernatural characteristics. Similarly, Stewart’s contemporary creatures are reminiscent of guardians and sentinels-like architectural gargoyles that are simultaneously protective and oddly mysterious.
