City Lease Agreement with Tinicum Township Benefits Airport
Property encompassing 21.8 acres will be used as runway safety area

Philadelphia - The City of Philadelphia has reached an agreement with Tinicum Township, Delaware County, to lease 21.8 acres of property adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport's Runway 9R and the Delaware River for use as a runway safety area to meet Federal Aviation Administration standards. The agreement provides for a 10-year lease term with the option to renew for an additional 10 years. The land will be leased at an annual cost of $85,000. The monies will be taken from the Aviation Fund and have no impact on the City's general fund.

Part of the City-owned Airport is located in Tinicum Township.

"The consummation of this agreement is the result of the City's excellent working relationship with Tinicum Township," said Mayor John F. Street. "The lease of this property will enhance the safety of passengers who use the Airport as well as the residents of Tinicum Township."

FAA regulations require airports to provide a safety area for each runway and taxiway. A Runway Safety Area, or RSA, is generally described as an area that is cleared and graded, free of surface variations and capable of supporting aircraft, emergency and snow removal equipment without resulting in damage to these vehicles. The RSA's purpose is to provide a measure of safety in the event of an aircraft's excursion from the runway by significantly reducing the extent of personal injury and aircraft damage during such incidents.

"There have been recent incidents at other airports in which planes overshot runways, resulting in personal injury and extensive property damage. The extension of the runway safety area will help us to avoid that type of incident in Philadelphia," said Charles J. Isdell, the City's Director of Aviation.
