Healthy Food Choices On the Menu
at Philadelphia International Airport Physicians Group
Gives PHL High Marks in Annual Survey Philadelphia - Patrons of Philadelphia
International Airport (PHL) restaurants can choose at least one healthy option
- a low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée - at 86% of
37 Airport eateries, according to the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine (PCRM) in its 2006 survey of 13 of the nation's busiest airports. This
was the first year PHL was included in the PCRM airport food survey, which has
been conducted since 2001. The PCRM is a nonprofit health organization that
promotes preventive medicine and good nutrition.
"Healthy eating can
be especially important to frequent travelers," said Charles J. Isdell, the
City's Director of Aviation. "I am pleased that PHL's efforts to give the
flying public healthy food choices have been recognized. Healthy food choices
go hand in hand with our smoke-free environment."
PCRM dieticians
evaluated the airports during a five-month period ending in October. Each
airport restaurant - defined as an establishment serving a main entrée -
was rated "healthful" if it served at least one low-fat, high-fiber,
cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée. The final percentage score for each
airport was determined by dividing the number of its healthful restaurants by
the total number of restaurants. The average score was 88%, a 13-point increase
from last year.
Noting that PHL "made a respectable debut" in the
annual survey placing 7th among rated airports, PCRM singled out the vegetable
sandwich or pasta marinara at Cibo Bistro and Wine Bar, the veggie bowl at
Asian Chao, and the veggie wrap or salads at Lamberti's International.
"We are very pleased that PCRM included PHL in their 2006 survey," said Paul
McGinn, President, MarketPlace Development. "In planning the food and beverage
program at PHL, MarketPlace Redwood has always made the availability of healthy
choices a priority. We consider it to be an important part of our job to make
sure that the traveling public has a full range of healthy and nutritious
dining choices."
