PHL unveiled its new
state-of-the-art Deicing Facility in 2002. Located on 35 acres of land at the
west end of the airport (next to Cargo City), the Deicing Facility includes two
aircraft deicing aprons, a deicing fluid delivery system, a deicing fluid
recovery system, and a fully integrated computerized aircraft guidance and
deicing control system. The facility can handle three wide-body aircraft and
four smaller aircraft simultaneously.
An
important feature of the facility is its ability to capture and properly
dispose of deicing fluid runoff in a manner that protects water quality and
nearby water bodies. A network of inlets and stormwater drains provide
wastewater collection for both deicing aprons. This stormwater drainage system
diverts deicing fluid runoff into the recovery collection system during deicing
operations.
Another benefit of the facility is the layout and number of deicing
positions available. With the new advanced technology, the operation is more
efficient and the time it takes to deice an aircraft is minimized, so fuel is
conserved and air quality is improved.
The airport worked very closely with the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Tinicum Township to design a facility
that enhances passenger safety while respecting and protecting the
environment.
