Philadelphia artist Christine Larsen is a cartoonist and illustrator who creates comics, book covers, stories, posters, and websites. One of Larsen's recent projects Microcosmics, a magazine that features a series of 4 short stories, has been described as a visual experience where the viewer will "travel to another dimension, another world, another place in time and visit a strange land where fantastic creatures and magical beings exist in silence."
Similarly, as seen in the wordless, large-scale, 5-panel print Farewell to Night, Larsen depicts an imagined landscape that celebrates the coming of morning as mystical characters and creatures begin their day. It is a fantasy landscape inspired by some of Larsen's favorite folklore. She said, "I wanted this world to be something all its own with fun and whimsical elements." Larsen's panoramic illustration incorporates detailed and meticulous black ink line work, mark making, and shading accentuated throughout with yellow highlights and an overall yellow background that bathes the entire landscape in the new morning sun.
In 2011, Larsen was nominated for the Harvey Award for Best Online Comics Work. The award is peer-nominated for "outstanding work in comics and sequential art." She has a worked for renowned clients that include Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Saatchi & Saatchi, Simon & Schuster, and Cartoon Network (Adventure Time).
