The Capital Development Program at the Department of Aviation (DOA) is bringing innovation to our airfields, terminals and roadways and is strengthening our regional economic impact. Through the program, DOA is continuing a commitment of over $1.8 billion in approved funding to make critical improvements and develop new infrastructure at both Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE). These airfield, terminal and landside projects are improving the customer experience, laying the groundwork for future development, and capitalizing on the role that the DOA plays as a regional economic engine.
In total $1.8 billion is approved to provide innovations and improvements to the Airports including $1.03 billion for terminal and landside projects, $545 million for airfield and apron projects, $174 million to upgrade security and information technology, and $65 million for PNE projects.
Major improvements are being made to enhance the customer experience at PHL such as modernizing its 48 sets of passenger-facing restrooms to not only accommodate more travelers but to keep them safe by implementing modern strategies such as smart and touchless restroom equipment. This award winning program has received $39 million in grant funding to-date from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Additional modernization projects include the SEPTA Airport Line platform rehabilitation project which will significantly enhance the appearance and functionality of each of the airport’s rail platforms. The project also includes the installation of nearly 700 new LED light fixtures; as a result the platforms will benefit from a 73% reduction in lighting power.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, PHL has also embarked on a Master Plan Update to accommodate the ongoing growth of the region and modernize its facilities and operations. The resulting Master Plan Update will outline a capital improvement program and 20-year implementation plan that clearly establishes how improvements can be made and potentially funded to support the vision of a world class airport that connects Philadelphia’s people and economy to the rest of the world.
