PHL Celebrates National Volunteer Month
250 hours served honorees

Every April, the nation celebrates those who give their time in service to others during National Volunteer Month, with a special spotlight during National Volunteer Week. Among those unsung heroes are the incredible airport volunteers who work on the front lines to ensure a warm, welcoming, and smooth experience for millions of travelers. The Department of Aviation honored all the volunteers on April 22 in a pin ceremony.

The Guest Experience (GX) PHL Navigators Program is managed by Travelers Aid. Volunteers were honored for serving 250, 750,

and 1,000 hours at the airport. On any given day, the PHL Volunteer Navigators assist guests with everything from ground transportation, hotel shuttles, food recommendations, lost and found, to find their gate. No two days are ever the same for the volunteers who help guests’ morning, noon and night. Last year, Volunteer Navigators served more than 9,700 Hours and assisted more than 176,000 Passengers.

“In 2026, Philadelphia will host the nation’s 250th Birthday, the FIFA World Cup, the NCAA first and second round games, the PGA championship, and the MLB All-Star Game,” said Department of Aviation CEO Atif Saeed. “The success of our airports and the events of 2025 and 2026 will be built on the foundation you help strengthen every single day. Thank you for your time, your energy, and your dedication.  You are the ambassadors of our airport, our city, and our spirit of hospitality.”

As part of Volunteer Celebration Week, PHL’s leaders joined the Volunteer Navigators at terminal information counters. Under the volunteers’ guidance, the chiefs assisted passengers and helped them navigate the airport.

Reflecting on his experience, Chief Information Officer Allen Mehta shared how meaningful the role of volunteers is at PHL and the value of human interaction in an increasingly digital environment. “Technology is great, but it doesn’t solve all the problems. People still want that face-to-face connection,” he explained Volunteers bring that personal touch that just doesn’t come through on a screen.”

Chief Strategy Officer Cassie Schmid enjoyed volunteering with PHL Navigator Laverne Vaughn. “I learned a lot while

volunteering,” said Schmid. “I would love to do it again. The highlight of my experience was reuniting a couple that had gotten separated.”

Saeed also volunteered alongside the team and expressed an enlightening experience. “It was truly wonderful to witness our volunteers in action and all the tools they utilize,” he said. “It gave insight into the types of inquiries passengers make and just how essential our volunteers are. Taking the time to join our volunteers and gain firsthand experience gives one a deeper appreciation and understanding for everything that goes on at the airport. When people see leadership actively participating, it also communicates a powerful message."

Congratulations to all the PHL Volunteer Navigators!
