Philadelphia artist Astrid Bowlby has created a site-specific installation that incorporates a wide variety of familiar objects-some are found objects, some are handmade. Her colorful arrangement of seemingly disparate elements includes an orange suitcase overflowing with ribbons of paper, a two-dimensional light-blue cloud, a large surrealistic wax fork, bottles and cans, neatly folded vibrant green towels, and a partially coiled electrical cord.
Bowlby has arranged these objects into a purposeful state of disarray to emulate a temporary, transient situation. The display is like a backstage filled with theatrical props or an artist's studio where the elements are meant to stay behind-the-scenes as not to reveal the creative process.
