Philadelphia artist Tiantian Li works in a variety of mediums including oil paint, watercolor, fabric, collage, and installation. Li’s work is inspired by Chinese landscape painting coupled with her interest in textiles, particularly their patterns and textures. Unlike traditional Chinese landscape painting, Li paints on cut-out wooden shapes and uses the entire wall as her canvas.

The shapes are organic, each with undulating curves either cut-out or painted. May appear to be adrift as if portions of landmasses, waterfalls, flowers, and water droplets float atop the wall. She purposefully arranges the shapes to emulate Chinese landscape composition because as Li has said, “the ancient painters see different landscapes through the passage of time…and the paintings do not have a visual focal point.”

Li’s installation Dreamland is abstract yet there are moments of familiarity depicted in the stylized water drops and wavey forms. She pushes the abstraction even further by using patterns and textures to adorn the elements.
