“It is my hope that everyone who is coming and going can take time to appreciate those that keep things working…it takes a lot of people to make sure you get to where you’re going…Take the time to notice and if you get the chance, thank our fellow workers for a job well done.” E.L.

Philadelphia artist Evan Lovett is a muralist who creates public art that focuses on animals, typically to raise awareness of a species conservation status; a tattoo artist known for his “large-scale, fully rendered free-hand designs;” and a painter whose larger-than-life spray painted portraits depict “workers, makers, and creators.”

Lovett’s first iteration of Idle Hands featured a collection of 14 portraits of people who work with their hands. The series included an artist, photographer, writer, barber, DJ, knitter, and carpenter—all spray painted on wooden cutouts. Lovett also featured their hands, spray painted as 2 cutouts positioned in front of each portrait.

Similarly, he has created Landing Gear using the same aesthetic approach. Here, Lovett has portrayed 5 employees at Philadelphia International Airport, a small representation of those who are integral to the facility’s operations—24/7/365. From ensuring everyone’s security, serving amazing food, to keeping the Airport clean along with airline personnel who transport us safely, Lovett says that this exhibition is a “celebration of the people” at PHL.
