In 2018, Hagopian Arts initiated a public art series of ecologically themed murals known as the Eco Mural Project. Its goal is to raise environmental awareness and beautify the Philadelphia streetscape. This initiative was founded by Philadelphia artist Kala Hagopian whose mission is to “introduce ecological awareness into the everyday routine of residents” by strategically locating her eco paintings throughout the city’s neighborhoods and schools.

Hagopian’s eco paintings feature vibrant color palettes and detailed compositions that are meticulously rendered, almost photographic. They appear to glow with an overall luminous effect that underscores the brilliance found in nature. Their striking, street-side beauty, captures the attention of passers-by, while each offers additional information about the subject’s conservation status or habitat. Hagopian says, “the murals encourage conversations and directs viewers to important educational resources and foundations that are fighting climate change, environmental degradation, and mass extinction.”

Like her portrait paintings, the eco compositions are often accentuated with patterned backgrounds that infuse a decorative architectural quality to the otherwise all-natural content. Hagopian’s use of patterns is a means to bridge the relationship between nature and the urban landscape where her artwork exists.
