Philadelphia artist Low Level is best known for his street art. His earliest work were small, coffin-shaped plywood cutouts, painted black, and each featured a phrase, usually a song lyric. He attached his mini coffins to telephone poles throughout the city. Low Level continues to work in this style and has developed other text-based street art signs while staying true to his signature placement on telephone poles.

Low Level also uses song lyrics in his recent series of vintage suitcases sourced from thrift stores, flea markets, antique shops, family attics, and some, he has found curbside amongst the trash. His original painted suitcases were created for personal use. He said, “to fly out of PHL in style.” Low Level prefers pre-1970 suitcases, or as he described it, “the Golden Age of suitcases,” now a little worn and “beat up with a past.”

He has said that “vintage suitcases are more interesting to paint on than a typical canvas.”  They are nostalgic recollections of old-school travel. Like his previous work, he similarly incorporates familiar song lyrics or phrases onto the surfaces of the suitcases using handmade stencils and spray paint. He wants people to be able to “relate to it because it’s a meaningful phrase or saying.” It’s accessible.

“The best part is finding something that others see no value in and knowing that I can turn it into something desirable and recognizable.” Low Level
