AURORA ABZUG: Travelers' Treats
AURORA ABZUG: Travelers' Treats
Terminal D - Ticketed Passengers

Philadelphia-based artist Aurora Abzug creates work in the realm of figurative realist painting. Her practice explores themes of escape, introspection, and the preservation of fleeting moments to reflect on the human experience. Although her painstaking technique harkens back to beaux arts academic traditions, her subject matter is infused with contemporary digital and consumer culture. Cake, beer, and stuffed animals often recur in her work and have specific symbolic associations.

For her exhibition at Philadelphia International Airport, Abzug presents tender depictions of three figures, each clutching small treats. The models’ faces are cropped out, giving them a sense of anonymity. At the same time, they feel intensely intimate. Closeups of their hands and torsos expose details, such as tattoos, skin tone, jewelry and clothing choices, that reveal other aspects of their identities. In describing the inspiration for this work, she states, “This piece celebrates some of my favorite local treats and joy experienced in the company of friends. Set as a picnic in Rittenhouse Square, “Travelers’ Treats” invites viewers to enjoy the sweetest experiences Philly has to offer, as well as the beauty of springtime in the city. My work in general focuses on objects as vehicles of emotional expression, and in this painting, the baked goods and flowers augment the playful fun I wish to convey, harmonizing with the outfits and gestures of the friends depicted.”
