Carolina Marín Hernández is a Philadelphia-based artist, educator, and community organizer. Born in Cali, Colombia and raised in Queens, New York, Carolina celebrates her multicultural roots through sculpture, weaving, and performance-based work. She uses decorative ceramics, vibrant colors, and woven corn husks to construct large-scale artworks imbued with animism, humor, and memories.

Carolina represents part of a growing community that explores the monolithic identification of Latinidad and whether it remains useful as an ethnocultural category. The title of her exhibition, Mas Perdida Que Embolatada, is a Colombian colloquial expression used to describe a person who is caught in a mess or unaware of what’s going on. It roughly translates to “more lost than confused”. However, within the context of Carolina’s artwork, it also seems to suggest that our definitions of identity are rooted in geography and land over lived experience. As a first-generation, formerly undocumented person, she seeks to rethink identities imposed onto her through experimentations with language, form, and material. She states, “The only way to create a more inclusive, inviting space is to advocate for our underserved communities… Liberation is possible by creating sustainable communities which welcome all.”
