Philadelphia artist Cindy Lozito is a visual storyteller who views every project as an opportunity to create a bridge between artist and audience. Her work is rooted in drawing and painting, and ranges in scale from small comics to building-sized murals. Recurring themes in her work include how our identities are formed, processing familial loss through story preservation, and the power of imagination and play from childhood into adulthood.
Originally from Queens, NY, Cindy draws on her own lived experience to create joyful and colorful spaces. For her exhibition at Philadelphia International Airport, she recalls memories from her youth. She states, “Before I was born, my dad had a fish collection so large that tanks filled every room of our apartment. He downscaled to make room when my sister and I were born, but a beautiful fish tank remained glowing and luminous across the couch in our living room throughout most of our childhood. Sometimes I'd sit in front of the tank after school to watch mesmerized as African cichlids scuttled behind shrubs, chased each other, and took long, laborious bites of fish food flakes. Aquariums remain some of my favorite places to visit when I travel; they transport me to those languorous afternoons as a kid, watching our family fish as time stood still. In my best dreams, I'm still in that trancelike state of observation, but the line between their underwater world and my earth blurs; I'm brushing my fingers against their fins, and they're swimming peacefully among coral and clouds.”
