Terminal D - Ticketed Passengers

Philadelphia artist Corinna Cowles creates objects and experiences where color and pattern, text and textile, domestic architecture, and the body lose their individual definition and take shape in a playful space of mutable materials and methods. Her work is primarily inspired by clothing and decorative patterns. Painting, ceramics, and fibers merge with issues of identity, craft, and class to engage the viewer with whimsical dislocations and transformations.

Corinna’s early work began with large-scale fabric paintings which involved painting, cutting, layering, and reworking scraps of textiles into collages. This process naturally led to her current explorations in clay which are focused on the rhythmic point-counterpoint between 2D-3D, positive-negative space, and upscale-downscale shifts. For her exhibition at Philadelphia International Airport, Corinna presents sculptures formed by slicing ceramics and rebuilding the remnants, scraps, and found materials into paintings. The combined processes create forms that seep into a multi-material plane of grids, loops, and abstractions of the everyday.
