PHL Impression Makers: LeBus Café Barista Akam Islam

LeBus Café barista Akam Islam recently received the “Impression Makers” award from Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) Employee Recognition Program. This award recognizes customer-facing employees who provide direct customer service to passengers.

Akam IslamAs a barista, Islam serves guests different items on the LeBus menu with the utmost customer service. He’s been at PHL for one year and works the 1– 10 pm shift, Sunday through Thursday.

Customer service is vital to Islam as he ensures guests leave with a great experience at LeBus. He enjoys making guests all their favorite coffee and tea drinks while serving them the best pastries.

“My priority is my customer,” said Islam. “If they’re good, I’m good; if they’re happy, I’m happy. I believe their time is valuable and I want to ensure I fulfill anything they need.”

At PHL, Islam is known for his customer-centrism, transcending expectations, and proactive communication. Anytime he sees elderly guests in need, he goes above and beyond to escort them to their gate. He wants others to follow his example. He’s always smiling and enjoys making passengers feel relaxed. His number one goal is to see passengers leave PHL happy.

In her nomination of Islam, Travelers Aid Volunteer Stephanie Abbott stated, “A passenger discovered she lost her wallet when she went to pay for coffee at LeBus. Akam told her not to worry about the coffee and then sent her to us at the Information Desk for help locating her wallet. Upon returning to the terminal after finding her wallet, Akam didn't want payment for coffee and offered her a Danish. The passenger, Pamela Bates, was so grateful for his kindness, especially after a trying episode. Well done, Akam!”

Islam immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh last year. He’s fluent in Bengali and uses this skill to connect with passengers who speak the same language. He loves seeing the diversity of passengers at PHL and believes Philadelphia is a nice city.

“I love my company,” said Islam. “The LeBus team, including Todd Cavallaro, Jean Tape, and Dan Jafarian, are all supportive, good men. I thank Marketplace PHL and all my coworkers.”

The PHL Employee Recognition Program was established by the airport’s Guest Experience (GX) Department.
