PHL Unsung Heroes: MarketPlace PHL Custodian Arturo Arreguin

MarketPlace PHL Custodian Arturo Arreguin recently received the “Unsung Heroes” award from Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) Employee Recognition Program. The program honors employees who work behind the scenes and are not typically recognized for their work. Although they do not work directly with guests, their effectiveness significantly affects the airport and guest experience.

Arturo ArreguinAs a custodian, Arreguin maintains the cleanliness of PHL Food and Shops' stores, restaurants, and food courts throughout the terminals. He works the 2-10:30 p.m. shift and has been at PHL for 14 years.  At the airport, Arreguin focuses on teamwork, effectiveness, respect, integrity, customer-centrism, prioritizing passenger needs and transcending expectations.

“I want passengers to be happy,” said Arreguin. “I love everything about the airport.”

In her nomination of Arreguin, Paradies Lagardére’s Assistant General Manager Angela DeMarco-Frey stated, “Arturo is always very sure to not miss a store. He greets everyone with the upmost respect, a positive attitude, perfect dress code and a big smile. He is an absolute pleasure to meet. I've witnessed him stopping to smile and interact with guests in need. When he cleans something, it is visibly spotless. He is a great example of how all employees should care about the job they do and the guests that secure their job! He is truly an unsung hero!”

Over the years, Arreguin has enjoyed seeing the growth of the airport, including witnessing the construction of Terminal F. He frequently helps guests navigate the airport and utilizes his native Spanish speaking skills to assist Spanish-speaking guests.

In his recommendation of Arreguin, MarketPlace PHL Housekeeping Manager Kefa Achenchi stated, “Arturo is always punctual, supportive, and detailed in his work. He’s a team player and understands his job well.”

“I like to get along with everyone,” said Arreguin. “My coworkers are like my second family. It makes the job easier when all my coworkers are friendly.”

Arreguin is known for being responsible and is always organized and ready to work.

Family is important to Arreguin. He is proud of his three children, who have all excelled in education. He enjoys spending time with them at the park and outdoors.

Arreguin gets excited when guests ask him for food and store recommendations at the airport. He typically recommends a few of the more than 170 available shops, stores, and restaurants at the airport.

“The people in this airport are really nice,” said Arreguin. “I appreciate MarketPlace PHL for trusting me to get the job done. I want to thank everyone in the Marketplace PHL leadership and team for this recognition.”

The PHL Employee Recognition Program was established by the airport’s Guest Experience (GX) Department. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by the GX Council Steering Committee’s Employee Conduct and Recognition Committee.
