Philadelphia artist Nitza Walesca Sierra is a ceramicist and educator whose practice is deeply connected to her place of origin, La Isla de Encanto, Puerto Rico. Inspired by her mother’s dedication to community involvement, Nitza creates vessels imbued with characteristics of matriarchal femininity. The shape of each pot takes its cues from a woman’s body—handles that resemble hands placed confidently on hips or curly tresses cascading down shoulders. The works are a tribute to strong women in her life. In addition to her mother, whose textile patterns adorn the pedestals for this installation, she is also influenced by her third-grade teacher who taught Nitza to observe closely and appreciate the world around her.

Mis Tesoros, or “My Treasures”, is a collection of 18 matte black vessels that are a testament to the things we carry with us, the places, people, and passions that shape our lives. The works are informed by both Taino and African cultures, building upon centuries of ceramic history. The carved surfaces of Nitza’s work (she considers herself a carver above all else), refer to Taino symbols, as well as Philadelphia architecture. The West Philly skyline and street poles along Broad Street are motifs that often arise in her carved decorations. Together, these varied traditions infuse Nitza’s work with a sacred sense of place, belonging, and cultural specificity.
