Philadelphia-based street artist Sean Hassett began his creative journey in 2012. Largely self-taught, he draws inspiration from his grandfather’s stained-glass workshop, as well as from historical artists such as Picasso, Keith Haring, and Basquiat. Hassett, who is more widely known by his tag “Irregular”, incorporates mirror fragments into his paintings to create a literal and metaphorical reflection of the world around him in which he often felt different. He states, “Coming up as an artist on the street, and in a phase where many artists found themselves through social media, I knew I’d have to create my own recipe outside…I wanted to reflect something irregular…a sense of identity."
Air travel to destinations across the globe is so commonplace these days (PHL alone transports almost 30 million passengers per year) that many have become immune to the gravity-defying feat of traveling tens of thousands of feet above the earth. For his exhibition at PHL airport, Hassett wanted to rekindle the wonder of flight and reflect the joy and youthful spirit that lives within each of us. We the Youth is dedicated to the artist’s three children, Xiomara, Isabella, and Kian.
