Strengthening PHL’s primary runway for the future
To ensure safe, reliable operations today and for decades to come, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is investing in the rehabilitation of Runway 9R–27L, the busiest and most essential runway, through a carefully phased, multi-package approach to leave daytime flight schedules largely unaffected.
The project replaces aging pavement, reinforces underlying structures, upgrades airfield lighting systems, and reconfigures connecting taxiways to meet the latest Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety and design standards.
These improvements allow the runway to support increasing aircraft demand while extending its usable life by decades, ensuring PHL remains prepared for future growth.
“I am excited to tackle another challenging airfield project with the same team that successfully completed the Taxiway K Reconstruction Program. We look forward to applying our experience and knowledge from DCA to completing this project as efficiently as possible to maintain consistent flight operations at PHL."
