The Philadelphia Autism Project, located at the Policy and Analytics Center in the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, was founded in 2014. It is the city’s first resource hub for autistic individuals and their families that provides educational programs, training, community collaborations, events, and grassroots seed funding for organizations to develop new initiatives. Over its nearly decade-long history, the Philadelphia Autism Project has worked to ensure that “Philadelphia is a top city for people on the spectrum and more broadly, a city of inclusion.”

One of the organization’s innovative programs focuses on the visual arts to recognize the creative talents of Philadelphia-area youth who are on the spectrum. Artists 18 years-old and younger, were invited to participate and the artwork submitted is representative of various schools in their network.

The Philadelphia Autism Project was established by the office of former House Speaker and City Councilmember-at-Large Dennis M. O’Brien and continues to be supported through the office of City Councilmember-at-Large Derek S. Green. The organization states that “A fundamental component of the Philadelphia Autism Project is our dedication to collaboration and strong partnerships throughout the City of Philadelphia.” Collaborators include Philadelphia City Council, the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disability Services, and Community Behavioral Health, along with their community of stakeholders who are self-advocates, family members, educators, service providers, policy and data specialists, researchers and more.
