Transforming departures into a thriving experience rooted in Philly’s history.
As part of our continuous commitment to enhancing the guest experience, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is honoring the history of the land the airport was built on by reimagining the departures experience as a place where passengers and employees can reconnect with the region’s local ecology.
Long before planes took flight here, the land beneath PHL thrived as tidal wetlands—alive with native grasses, winding streams, and migrating wildlife. Now, guests will step outside departures to find green spaces with walkways that follow the flow of the historic streams and native plants that bloom in colors that once painted these marshes.

Styled like airplane windows, installations frame the views of native plants while sharing their deep roots in the Delaware Valley’s ecosystem.
Each plant was chosen with purpose—supporting pollinators, creating wildlife habitats, resisting drought, and managing stormwater in a developed airport setting.
Landscapes evolve throughout the year, from spring blooms to fall foliage, ensuring guests discover something new each season.
Shaped like tree trunks, solar-powered lights provide a soft glow at night. In classic Philly red, they celebrate the city’s spirit while blending with nature.

PHL’s new landscaping comes to life throughout departures from Terminal A East to Terminal F. Each highlighted area marks a space where native plants, walkways, and interactive installations bring the historical stream’s history to life.
