This summer is already kicking off with a bang while working at the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). I’m working in the iX25 Program as a communications intern under Donna Jackson Stephans, vice president who supports small business development, workforce engagement and intern programs. The first week at PHL was both exhilarating and nerve-wrecking. I was nervous, shy, and unsure of what to expect. In exchange, I was shown nothing but great energy, hands-on learning, and engaging activities. The first two days of orientation were lively. We started off with learning about the company, the strategic plan, the program’s expectations, and an overview of what’s to come. We were then greeted with lunch and started icebreakers and games to get to know each other better.
“So far, I have had a great time at PHL. Everyone makes sure to include you in their larger projects, which really allows you to get hands-on experience in your field of interest. I have made amazing friends and got to pursue my passion for graphic design in a real-world setting where I have an amazing supervisor to mentor me,” said Hannah Weiss, graphic design intern.
On the second day, we had the opportunity to enjoy the pep rally in the terminals where water ice and pretzels were handed out to Department of Aviation employees. The next week, my fellow interns and I took a tour of City Hall, where we were greeted by workers who told us facts about the building and the people in it, walked into historical rooms, and had the opportunity to meet Vincent Thompson, director of communications for City Council President Kenyatta Johnson. This was a great and fun opportunity, especially for those who are interested in government. Moments like this really brought us closer as a cohort.
"Everyone I’ve met in International Plaza 2 has been friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help or greet me when I pass by," shared Accounts Receivable Clerk Intern Johen Philip. "This experience is already helping me build better habits and understand how important teamwork and a good work environment are in any job”.
So far, in my first two weeks working at PHL, I had the opportunity to create an event post for my supervisor on upcoming events and tours for PHL employees and was delighted to be given the responsibility of designing a brochure for the AEGs. This has been an exciting experience and I hope to gain more insight into public relations and develop my skills.
