On what many would call a perfect day to run, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) reintroduced the 5th 5K Run the Runway to runners and walkers. The participants were greeted by eager Division of Aviation staff who quickly signed in almost 400 competitors and distributed electronic bibs and t-shirts. As promised, the airfield was occupied by much of the equipment that is used to maintain airplanes, vital emergency rescue vehicles, and a few small aircraft, all of which provided great background for selfies.
Before hitting the runway, participants fueled themselves with nourishing snacks and water while being greeted by PHL’s Interim CEO (and 5K runner) Keith Brune, who wore his lucky t-shirt from 2017’s 5K. After the welcome, PHL Chief Financial Officer Tracy Borda led the excited runners and walkers in a pre-race stretch. We checked visitors’ identification (because we put security first) and they all hit the runway, running and walking. As they strode the runway, closely monitored aircrafts landed in the background on separate runways.
When finally “landing” at the finish line, many racers came in with their arms extended, imitating airplanes. Crossing the finish line in this fashion is quickly becoming a 5K Run on the Runway tradition- a fun celebratory ending for the runners as they complete the race. Watching the exuberant racers happily “land” was such fun to witness.
PHL extends a special thanks to the sponsors and donors who provided pre- and post-race snacks and beverages. Stokes Creative Group, Inc., also provided amazing drone video coverage, offering a look at the race from a bird’s eye view.
