Women’s History Month – Recognizing Assistant Director for Air Service Development and Cargo Services Nicole Maddox

Women's History Month presents a valuable opportunity to reflect on and honor the significant achievements of women across various industries. The City of Philadelphia, Department of Aviation recognizes women in aviation during this month and underscores the ongoing work to create more inclusive opportunities for future generations. This effort instills hope and optimism for a more diverse and equitable aviation industry in the future.

Meet Nicole Maddox, Assistant Director for Air Service Development and Cargo Services at PHL. Maddox oversees the cargo development strategy, which includes forming strategic partnerships with industry experts to develop cutting-edge cargo facilities. This initiative aims to leverage technology to enhance operational efficiency and promote sustainability in PHL’s operations. Maddox holds a Bachelor of Science in Transportation Planning and Management from Dowling College and an MBA in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She has been at PHL for 26 years.

PHL, strategically situated in one of the most densely populated regions in the U.S., enhances the region’s suitability as a hub for air cargo operations. Maddox’s focus is expanding cargo infrastructure and facilities, further establishing PHL as a premier destination on the East Coast for cargo and logistics services. “Transportation is essential to everyday life,” said Maddox. “You are part of something that makes the world go ‘round. I love contributing to something that’s bigger than myself.”

Maddox looks to her mother for inspiration and appreciates her mother's allowing her to follow her dreams and pursue an educational degree in transportation. Michelle Obama is another inspiration for Maddox. “I love that she is unapologetically herself and is the epitome of a successful woman.”

While working, Maddox appreciates diverse approaches to success from people of different backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences. “It’s important to have an eclectic pool of educational experiences,” she said. “This helps form the best team.”

Maddox has participated in several PHL events focused on empowering young women. “I would advise women thinking of entering the aviation industry to never doubt themselves,” she said. “Always be confident in the investments that you made in yourself. Don’t leave any opportunity unturned. Learn and experience as much as you can. Everything you do reflects you.”
